Listen, Hear, Act - Understanding And Responding To Children And Young People's Lived Experience of Domestic AbuseSince 1997, Clare Local Area Network (CLAN) has been in operation. The Network was originally established in response to a report from the National Task Force on Violence Against Women. The Network comprises of representatives from 16 local community, statutory and voluntary agencies supporting women, children and young people affected by Domestic Abuse. Part of CLANs work includes awareness building.
As a result, this resource for practitioners was developed. It aims at providing enhanced awareness and understanding of children and young people’s experience of living with Domestic Abuse. “Listen, Hear, Act” provides insight on how children and young people don’t just witness domestic violence as passive bystanders, but see it, hear it and feel it. Living with domestic abuse impacts on how they engage with the world around them, how they learn and develop, how they relate to others and ultimately how they navigate through their lives. It offers insight on how children and young people feel about their experiences, how practitioners can recognise the signs of domestic abuse in children and young people and offers signposting to local, regional and national services who can support and advise.
CLAN recognise that due to the complex nature of domestic abuse, no single agency or institution can successfully tackle such abuse on its own and isolated policies are not sufficient in responding to such a complex and multi-faceted challenge. Good practice examples show that results are enhanced when law enforcement authorities, the judiciary, victim support services, child protection agencies, schools, health professions, non-governmental organisations and other relevant partners join forces to develop a comprehensive and co-ordinated response to combating domestic abuse.
