(This is a STEAM video in association with the STEAMING Erasmus+ project. It showcases the use of STEAM as a teaching and learning strategy in Cratloe NS, Kilrush NS and O'Callaghan's Mills NS. Further details of the project and videos from the other partners can be found at www.steamingproject.eu.)

STEAMING is an Erasmus+ KA2 Project which commenced in September 2019 and has a completion date of November 2022 with the aim of engaging students in the creation of their own STEAM learning.  The project is a research and development programme in STEAM education and training. The project is being led by Clare Education Centre in partnership with Mary Immaculate College Limerick and educational institutions from Croatia, Greece, Norway and Portugal.

The three primary schools from Clare that are participating in the project are:

  • Cratloe National School
  • O’Callaghan’s Mills National School
  • Kilrush National School

The schools have been actively involved in the development of case studies, project videos, professional development and the creation of project resources. It is a testament to the staff of the schools involved in the project that they maintained and sustained their engagement with the project despite the ongoing difficulties and limitations posed by the Covid pandemic.

The STEM team from Mary Immaculate College has been hugely supportive throughout the project and has published a State of Art report on the place of STEAM in Irish schools. This has been supplemented by research from the three participating schools. The Mary Immaculate College team has produced further relevant research papers for the project, provided professional development inputs to project meetings and training events and supported the three participant schools and Clare Education Centre in their engagements with the project. Our project partners in Croatia, Greece, Norway and Portugal have been similarly committed to the project with each partner contributing reports, case studies, videos and resources for the project. The greatest benefit however has been the frequent online project meetings which have witnessed tremendous collaboration, learning and sharing. The cooperation between the partners resulted in the organisation of a very successful online Learning, Teaching and Training event in November 2021 which involved teachers and students from over 60 schools across the partner countries.

The project has recently hosted an international training course for teachers. The course was held in Croatia and 19 teachers from primary schools across County Clare attended the course. There will be a further training course in Thessaloniki in September 2022 and a further 19 teachers from Clare will be attending.  Two additional professional development sessions for participants from the partner organisations are planned for this coming Autumn.  Funding for these courses is provided through Erasmus+.

Our involvement with the Erasmus+ STEAMING Project has provided wonderful opportunities to develop our understanding of STEAM, to engage in professional development and to showcase STEAM teaching and learning in Primary Schools in County Clare. The project has given us a wonderful vehicle to collaborate on STEAM methodologies, resources and ideas and to consider how to collate and disseminate these ideas for the benefit of teachers in Clare and to the wider teaching audiences in Ireland, Croatia, Greece, Norway and Portugal.

The Fact Factory - A New Dyslexia -Friendly Magazine

The Fact Factory - A New Dyslexia -Friendly Magazine
The Fact Factory is a new monthly magazine whose mission is to make reading fun and accessible to all. It is written and recorded with marginalised readers in mind (children with dyslexia, visually impaired readers, readers with a reluctance to read, EAL children, etc.)  and works by combining audio and text. All content (bite-sized facts) is recorded by children (through Andy, Izzy, Brody, Heidi, Sayid and Brooke). These characters deliver fun and interesting facts about animals, insects, the body, famous people, sea creatures and iconic buildings every month.

The Fact Factory is available in both digital and print format. The digital edition comes with
videos, interactive quizzes and text highlighting (in time to the audio), while the print edition, with the G-Talk3 pen, enables the child to listen, read and record every word. This is what makes The Fact Factory a truly unique and accessible read.

Exploring Pupil Planning Across the Continuum of Support - PRIMARY

Dr. Claire Griffin will present a suite of four webinars which focus on best practice in support planning across the Continuum of Support, with specific focus on the primary school context. Over the course of four sessions, Dr. Griffin will explore support planning for pupils with additional or Special Education Needs (SEN) across each level of the Continuum of Support. Particular focus will be placed on compiling the Support File and Support Plan at Classroom Support, School Support and School Support Plus levels. Using the NEPS ‘Problem-Solving Approach’ as a framework for practice, attendees will be guided through a four-staged approach to (a) identifying pupil strengths and needs/concerns (b) information gathering & assessing (c) planning & intervening, and (d) reviewing pupil progress. Practical examples of target-setting, creating pupil plans and planning evidence-based pupil interventions will be explored, with due regard for monitoring and reviewing pupil progress. The importance of ‘student voice’ will also be emphasised throughout the planning process, with reference to a host of practical examples for accessing the voice of students with SEN. Schools Restorative Practices 'Headstart Program For Principals & Deputy Principals (P) (PP)

Schools Restorative Practices 'Headstart Program For Principals & Deputy Principals (P) (PP)
Restorative Practices have been shown worldwide to improve student outcomes as well as student and teacher experiences in schools. This course is designed for anyone wishing to foster and lead a restorative approach in their school. It mixes individual skills learning with support and guidance around implementation, and is an ideal springboard to leading the culture change you desire.
One of the key determinants of the success of any initiative in a school is the input and leadership from the top. This is certainly true in Restorative Practices. It takes more than just an awareness of the practice to help implement it across the board. What this tailored program will give participants is both the individual skills to really understand RP, as well
as the support required to make the paradigm shift that is needed within your school. As well as gaining from the direction and interactions of the course facilitator and wider group, participants will be paired with a practice partner from the beginning as an aid to skills practice. Overall, it provides an ideal springboard for when you decide to make the jump to a whole-school restorative approach.

Toe by Toe Online Training for Teachers, SNAs & Parents (P) (SNA)

Toe by Toe Online Training for Teachers, SNAs & Parents (P) (SNA)

The name Toe by Toe was chosen to signify that a student makes progress by the tiniest steps – one toe at a time. However, even though the steps taken are small, the student can clearly measure their progress right from the first page. The student’s confidence and self-esteem are boosted as a result.
Over 25 years of fieldwork went into the development of the system and it is this research which makes the method so easy to use. You don’t have to be trained in any field of Education to tutor with Toe by Toe. In fact, the manual often works better with non professionals using it as they do not come to the task with any pre-conceived notions and thus simply follow the very detailed instructions to the letter.
The unique syllable division is very easy to use though it is not the syllable division generally used for the teaching of reading. Once the sound of a phoneme has been taught using the ‘polynons’ (nonsense words), these rules can be applied to any multi-syllabic word & students find a whole new world of reading opening before their eyes.
No matter the nature of the student’s literacy problem, they can be taught using Toe by Toe. The severity of their problem may only be reflected in the length of time needed to get through the book. Indeed, if the system is used with a ‘non-dyslexic’ child (i.e. one without learning difficulties) the rapid improvement in reading age is truly astonishing.

9 Week Teacher / SNA Restorative Practices Skills Based Course (P) (PP) (SNA)

9 Week Teacher / SNA Restorative Practices Skills Based Course (P) (PP) (SNA)

Restorative Practice has been gaining in popularity in education circles for over 25 years now, and is now well established in the Irish landscape. There are many courses that offer an overview of the skills and philosophy but rarely do they give participants the opportunity to fully explore these new skills, and in the safe context of a practice partner who is also on the same path. Weekly emails help focus the learners with relevant suggested resources and this, combined with a weekly call with your practice partner, means you learn just enough at any one time. At the end of this course you will have an awareness of the benefits a restorative approach can bring to your classroom and your life, as well as proficiency in the skills needed to foster good relationships and respond to conflict when it arises.
