Research informs us that over 50% of all children will have experienced a traumatic event by the time they reach adulthood. (Copeland, W.E. et al, 2007) These children often get stuck in a survival loop which diminishes their capacity to regulate their emotions and behaviour. They no longer feel safe. Learning can only happen when a child feels safe.

From trauma reactive to trauma responsive for Secondary Schools (PP) (SNA)

Adolescence is a period of enormous growth and change where the typically developing teenager has to navigate a growing need for autonomy, a journey of self-discovery and an innate desire and drive to belong.
Considering this, it is clear that the adolescent journey into adult hood is already difficult. Add a history of trauma to the demands and struggles of this developmental stage and the journey becomes increasingly more complex.

From Worrier to Warrior – Helping the Anxious Child to find their Inner Warrior within the School Environment (P) (SNA)

While separation anxiety is a normal part of development, it becomes problematic when the symptoms; fear of being alone, fear of abandonment, somatic complaints, and worry about atrocities; hinders the child’s normal day to day living (Eisen & Schaefer; 2005.) 9 Week Teacher / SNA Restorative Practices Skills Based Course (P) (PP) (SNA)

Restorative Practice has been gaining in popularity in education circles for over 25 years now, and is now well established in the Irish landscape. There are many courses that offer an overview of the skills and philosophy but rarely do they give participants the opportunity to fully explore these new skills, and in the safe context of a practice partner who is also on the same path. Weekly emails help focus the learners with relevant suggested resources and this, combined with a  weekly call with your practice partner, means you learn just enough at any one time. At the end of this course you will have an awareness of the benefits a restorative approach can bring to your classroom and your life, as well as proficiency in the skills needed to foster good relationships and respond to conflict when it arises.
