Online Clare SENCO Forum Primary CoP – First Anniversary Meeting - Language and Literacy for Pupils with Additional Needs

The Sixth and First Anniversary meeting of the SENCO Primary CoP will focus on Spelling and Analytical Engagement in Levelled Readers for Pupils with Additional Needs

The Clare SENCO Forum Primary CoP, in collaboration with Clare Education Centre and Mary Immaculate College, celebrates its First Anniversary and continues to bring together online a network of teachers working in inclusive/special education in Clare Primary schools. The network aims to provide professional learning, support and networking opportunities for teachers. Maria Geaney facilitates the network and continues to support its development over time. If you are a Principal, Special Education Teacher or SEN Co-Ordinator, in a primary school in Clare, and would like to find out more about the network, please join us.

Maria Geaney 

Maria is the SENCO and Deputy Principal in Scoil Seanáin Naofa, Clonlara, Co. Clare. She is a Special Education Teacher in her school and completed the Graduate Diploma in Special Education in Mary Immaculate College in 2018.

Noelle Gleeson

Noelle Gleeson has 10 years’ experience as a Special Ed teacher in Cratloe N.S. and completed the Post Grad Dip in SEN 6 years ago. A founding member of Clare’s SENCO Forum Primary CoP, Noelle will present on “Words Their Way”, an innovative, multi-sensory, child-centred approach to the teaching of spellings that lends itself to group work and station teaching. Noelle introduced it at a whole school level a number of years ago and speaks to her lived experience of the programme in supporting pupils’ spelling.

Karen Riordan

Karen Riordan has been teaching for the last 15 years in a co-educational school, having benefited from both classroom and SEN experience. She has a special interest in working with children with additional needs having spent nine years as a Special Education Teacher. She has a particular passion for differentiated instruction having completed her Masters’ thesis on ‘One Size Doesn’t Fit All!’ Early Literacy Instruction is an area of special interest also for Karen having spent eight years as a Reading Recovery Teacher. Karen regularly facilitates Teacher Professional Development workshops on Literacy Initiatives, namely Literacy Lift Off and Guided Reading over the past ten years in Clare Education Centre. Karen remarks that ‘it is a pleasure to work with teachers directly in a supportive role to help make worthwhile literacy programs work within their own school context’. 

Clare’s SENCO Forum Primary CoP looks forward to both of these presentations from teachers in Clare.
