Course Overview

The aim of this session is to introduce a small group of teachers who are wishing to learn and share ideas about working with children who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

I hope to create a supportive atmosphere where teachers can share ideas which they have learned through their own unique experiences in a variety of Special Educational settings.

Caroline will lead this group, and together with the other educators, decide on the topics that will be spoken about and worked on during the sessions.

Members will be able to discuss ideas, build on their own confidence in the area of SEN and meet others who are working in similar settings.

The main topic which will be looked at in this session will be ‘Writing and Using Social Stories.’ There will also be ample opportunity to discuss any situations that may have arose in your classroom setting this year and to hopefully brainstorm solutions to these together.

Brief biography

Caroline Foran is a class teacher in St. Anne’s Special School, Ennis, where she has worked for the past eight years. Here she has had worked in range of classes including ASD units, Mild General Learning groups and Level 2 classes. Prior to this, she worked as Learning Support and Resource teachers in a number of schools around Ireland.

While studying her B.Ed in Mary Immaculate College, she completed her Pedagogy in the area of Applied Behavioural Analysis. She is currently undertaking a Post Graduate Course in SEN in Mary Immaculate College.

She continuously attends CPD courses and SEN workshops and is constantly looking to upskill and gain new experiences and knowledge in the area of SPED with particular interest in the Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Content

Some of the content to be covered during these sessions includes:

• Writing and using Social Stories
• Effective strategies for increasing positive behaviour and for decreasing undesirable behaviour
• Practical techniques and exercises for building social/communication skills in children with ASD
• The use of visual supports for children with ASD
• Issues around food/eating habits
