A Therapeutic Toolbox to Manage Challenging Behaviour Online Workshop Series

DATE:      12^th, 19^th, 26^th January and 2^nd February, 2021 (The course will run over 4 Tuesday evenings of 1 hour each)

This is an online, feedback-based presentation that will enable Primary and Secondary teachers, Special Needs assistants, SEN and support teachers to use various creative interventions to help and support children in their care. The presentation is designed to provide both theoretical background on challenging behaviours and offer practical methods to support children emotionally, socially and academically. It is structured to provide an opportunity to experiment with a number of creative mediums that can be effectively used to enhance relationships and regulate challenging behaviours so that children are primed for learning. You will also experience playful learning and gain an understanding of how the therapeutic values of play can support achievement of developmentally appropriate goals. The workshop will provide an opportunity to reflect on personal growth and foster self-care through adopting mindful practices.

This course will help to:

• Explore and elaborate the underlying reasons behind children’s behaviour.
• Gain an understanding of and deal with difficult emotions that are externalised as challenging behaviours.
• Practise skills and methods that will enable you to form nurturing connections with children in your care so they can tune in to learning.
• Adopt mindful practices to help children achieve and maintain emotional regulation.
• Create a Regulatory toolbox to support a child when they are experiencing big feelings.
• Discover the therapeutic values of play that can inform your approach to using play to enable and enhance learning.
• Practise self-care and understand the effects of secondary trauma on your mental health.

There will be hand outs, sample worksheets, research articles and references available to participants.

-BIO-

I am a Play therapist and Psychotherapist working with children, adolescents and adults for over 10 years. I provide Play therapy services in primary schools and in other community settings for children and adolescents. I deliver workshops and training for teachers in the areas of classroom behaviour management and positive mental health. I work with parents and families providing parenting support through experiential workshops and psychoeducation. I have been a teacher in primary and secondary schools in the past and am presently a Learning Support tutor in adult education.
