English Community of Practice English Community of Practice

DATE:       9th April 2019
TIME:
5.30pm to 7.30pm
VENUE:
Clare Education Centre

GUEST SPEAKER:    Patrick Huff

This two-hour session for Post Primary English teachers interested in supporting the development of their own professional knowledge, sharing expertise and further developing a highly effective English Subject Department at both Junior and Senior Cycle.

Originating from a desire to effectively combine the teaching of prescribed texts in Junior Cycle English with multiple goals (e.g. Learning Outcomes, oral development, critical thinking, collaboration, and the promotion of the writing process), the ‘Book Club’ method puts responsibility in the hands of students, allowing teachers to focus on facilitating quality discussion and writing.  Teachers will participate in a mini ‘Book Club’ and discuss how it could be applied within their own teaching context, possibly with a mind to Leaving Certificate English.

This Community of Practice will:

  • Aim to meet 4-5 times per year,
  • Support each other in the spirit and form of Communities of Practice to share expertise, experiences and exchange ideas,
  • Share resources, discuss and trial active teaching methodologies,
  • Using the P4C philosophy, a method for teaching reasoning and argumentative skills for students,
  • Aim to develop the leadership capacity of teachers in your subject department as they work within the context of a collaborative environment, committed to improving students' learning in the subject of English,
  • Discuss the process of critically engaging in "regular review" for subject department meetings,
  • Reflect on collaborating as professionals.
