Tionscadal Eolaíochta ETIEM do Mhúinteoirí agus Bunscoileanna

Tá an tionscadal seo á rith i gcomhar leis an Institiúid Oideachais, OCBÁC, Droim Conrach, agus leis an gComhpháirtíocht Ghael-Mheiriceánach (CGM). Bunaíodh an tionscadal seo leis an aidhm tairbhí na Forbartha Gairmiúla Leanúnaí (FGL) san eolaíocht bhunscoile a chur ar fáil ar bhealach níos forleithne do mhúinteoirí bunscoile i scoileanna beaga faoin tuath i gCo. an Chláir. Tá na ceardlanna comhoibríoch den chuid is mó agus cuirtear béim láidir ar shaineolas peidagógach níos fearr a fhorbairt, chomh maith le heolas ar an ábhar a dhoimhniú.

This project is run in partnership with the Institute of Education, DCU, Drumcondra and The Irish American Partnership (IAP).  The project was established with the aim to make the benefits of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in primary science more widely available to primary school teachers in small rural schools in Co Clare.  The workshops are collaborative in nature with a strong emphasis on developing greater pedagogical expertise as well as deepening subject knowledge.

Le blianta fada tá Ionad Tacaíochta Oideachais an Chláir ag cur múineadh ‘na hEolaíochta’ chun cinn sna scoileanna a bhfreastalaíonn sé orthu. Ba iad úsáid ábhar, cur chun cinn na foghlama gníomhaí, chomh maith le foghlaim chomhoibríoch, an bhunchloch ar a forbraíodh an cur chun cinn seo. Cúpla bliain ó shin, cuireadh tús le plé ar ‘ETIM’, ‘ETIEM’ a tugadh air ina dhiaidh sin, agus ba aistriú éasca é do go leor scoileanna i gCo. an Chláir iniúchadh a dhéanamh ar an oideachas ‘ETIEM’ mar gheall ar an obair a bhí déanta acu san oideachas Eolaíochta. Seasann ETIEM don Eolaíocht, Teicneolaíocht, Innealtóireacht, Ealaín agus Mata. Tosaítear na daltaí ar na hábhair seo go léir trína rannpháirtíocht sa tionscadal eolaíochta seo.

For many years the Clare Education Centre has been promoting the teaching of ‘Science’ in the schools that it serves.  The use of materials, the promotion of active learning as well as co-operative learning were the foundation on which this promotion was built.  A few years ago ‘STEM’ and later ‘STEAM’ began to be discussed and it was an easy transition for many Clare schools to explore ‘STEAM’ education because of the work they had undertaken in Science education.  STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.  Pupils are exposed to all these subjects through their participation in this science project.

Tá lúchair ar Ionad Tacaíochta Oideachais an Chláir an tionscadal ETIEM seo a chur chun cinn, ionas gur féidir cur go mór le múineadh agus foghlaim na heolaíochta i scoileanna áitiúla. Is é Michael Browne a stiúrann an tionscadal seo agus déanann sé iarracht a chinntiú go bhfuil gníomhaíochtaí cuimsitheach, rannpháirtíoch agus bunaithe ar mhodheolaíocht thógachaíoch. Tá an t-aiseolas a fuarthas ó dhaltaí agus múinteoirí rannpháirteacha iontach ar fad. Tugann Michael deis iontach don scoil ar fad breathnú ar chleachtas ranga i réimse na múinteoireachta agus na foghlama ETIEM, chomh maith leis an gcaoi a dtugtar faoin mata agus eolaíocht. Tá an clár bunaithe thart ar an úsáid laethúil a bhaintear as ábhair chun ceisteanna eolaíochta a phlé agus chun turgnamh a dhéanamh chun teacht ar réitigh. Faoi láthair, tá 14 dár scoileanna móra agus 16 dár scoileanna beaga rannpháirteach in iniúchtaí éagsúla ETIEM againn. I 2019, tá sé mar aidhm againn cur leis na huimhreacha seo. I láthair na huaire, níl sé neamhchoitianta ranganna a fheiceáil i mbunscoileanna an Chláir ag obair i ngrúpaí beaga ag pleanáil, ag tógáil agus ag meas tionscadal éagsúil a chuir siad le chéile trí leas a bhaint as ‘an mbealach oibre ETIEM’. Déanann páistí droichid, sleamhnáin mirlíní, córais ulóg, boird leictreonacha do thráth na gceist a thógáil, gan ach cúpla ceann a lua, ach le hionchur ón múinteoir ar a laghad. Faigheann na páistí an deis chun pleanáil, plé, triail a bhaint as rudaí, iniúchadh a dhéanamh, agus a bheith cruthaitheach agus an múinteoir ag spreagadh agus ag tacú leo.

Clare Education Centre is delighted to promote this STEAM project, in order to further enrich science teaching and learning in local schools.  Michael Browne leads this project and endeavours to ensure that activities are inclusive, participative and based on a constructivist methodology.  Feedback from the participating pupils and teachers has been extraordinary.  Michael provides a great opportunity for the whole school to take a look at classroom practice in the area of STEAM teaching and learning as well as how maths and science are addressed.  The programme is based around the use of everyday materials to explore science questions and to experiment to find solutions. At present we have 14 of our large schools and 16 of our smaller schools involved in various ‘STEAM’ explorations.  In 2019 we plan to expand these numbers.  At present it isn’t uncommon to see classes in Clare Primary Schools working in small groups planning, building and evaluation various projects that they have put together using ‘the STEAM way of working’.  The children build bridges, marble runs, pulley systems, electronic quiz boards, to mention but a few, but with a minimum of teacher input.  The children get to plan, discuss, try out, explore and be creative while the teacher encourages and supports.

Cuirtear roinnt tacaíochtaí ar fáil do scoileanna a ghlacann páirt sa chlár seo. Cuirtear oideachas inseirbhíse i modheolaíochtaí ETIEM ar fáil ar bhonn leanúnach do mhúinteoirí a bhfuil a gcuid ranganna ag glacadh páirte sa tionscadal. Cuirtear inseirbhís foirne iomláine ar fáil do scoileanna rannpháirteacha agus taispeántar ceachtanna múnla i ngach scoil rannpháirteach.

Mar gheall ar an tacaíocht a thug an Chomhpháirtíocht Ghael-Mheiriceánach agus an tInstitiúid Oideachais, OCBÁC, Droim Conrach, tá an tionscadal ina thriú bliain. Tá sé beartaithe, chun béim ETIEM a leabú tuilleadh i scoileanna rannpháirteacha, an tionscadal a leathnú chun laethanta agus deiseanna foghlama comhroinnte a chuimsiú do mhúinteoirí chun páirt a ghlacadh i bPobail Ghairmiúla Múinteoirí Eolaíochta.

A number of supports are offered to schools who participate in this programme.  Inservice education in STEAM methodologies is offered on an ongoing basis to teachers of classes participating in the project.  Whole staff inservice is offered to participating schools and model lessons are demonstrated in each participating school.    
Thanks to the support of The Irish American Partnership and Institute of Education, DCU, Drumcondra, the project is in its third year.  To further embed the focus of STEAM in participating schools, it is intended to extend the project to include shared learning days and opportunities for teachers to participate in Science Teacher Professional Communities.
